Stair lift vs elevator, platform lift and ramp
A stair lift is a seat moving along a rail fixed to your steps, while a home elevator carries you in a compact cab that rises through a shaft of its own. Ramps and platform lifts sit between the two.
Stair lift vs elevator in one table
| Option | Who it suits | Installed cost | Building work | Fitting time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stair lift (stair elevator) | You can use this if you are able to sit, fasten a belt, and step off at the top. | $2,500–$12,000 | None needed: treads on the stairs hold the rail in place. | A few hours, two days at most |
| Inclined platform lift | This is for a wheelchair user on a staircase who cannot move onto a seat. | $5,000–$15,000+ | In most cases none: the stairs get no changes and no pad is put in. | Many go in within a few days |
| Vertical platform lift | A wheelchair user who goes up a porch or a short climb of 4 to 10 feet | $12,000–$35,000 | Often a concrete pad outside, a hoistway inside | Usually under a day once approved |
| Home elevator | Anyone, including wheelchair users and people carrying things | $35,000–$100,000 | You will need a pit and shaft, or just a floor hole for shaftless models. | One to four weeks |
| Wheelchair ramp | This helps a wheelchair user deal with just a few steps at an entrance. | $1,000–$10,000+ | Allow space for 12 inches of ramp length for every inch of height. | A modular ramp often in a day |

How to choose between them
Choose a stair lift when the rider can sit down and stand up at the top. Mounting on stairs instead of walls, it costs a fraction of an elevator and goes in within a day (Stannah).
Select a home elevator if you need to move a wheelchair upstairs, serve multiple people, or plan to stay long term. Construction is required, yet this can boost value for a multi-story house (Lifeway Mobility). A stair lift doesn't add value, and many buyers want it taken out before they move in.
Opt for a ramp or platform lift if the rider must remain seated in the wheelchair. Check out wheelchair elevators for stairs.
Space requirements for each type
- Stair lift: since manufacturers differ, stairs about 24 to 32 inches wide. Expect the rail to extend 6 to 9 inches away from the wall.
- Home elevator: each floor needs 12 to 18 square feet of space (Fixr).
- Vertical platform lift: roughly 6 by 6 feet at the base.
- Ramp: for each inch of rise, 12 inches of ramp, at least 36 inches wide (ADA standards).
Residential stair lifts and elevators: why the prices differ
No other row shows as much price variation as elevators do. For most homes, dealers quote $35,000 and up, yet Fixr puts a one-floor tube elevator needing no shaft at about $10,000 fitted. Adding a shaft and getting permits will increase that total cost.
